Oregon Army National Guard to mobilize Soldiers of 3-116 Cavalry Brigade at LaGrande ceremony

Soldiers from the Oregon Army National Guard's 3-116 Cavalry Battalion will take part in a mobilization ceremony at 12:00 p.m., Sept. 21, at the Eastern Oregon University Community Stadium. The stadium is located at One University Blvd., in LaGrande, Ore.

Approximately 600 citizen-Soldiers from throughout Oregon will join their counterparts from Idaho and Montana to comprise the 116 Cavalry Brigade. The Soldiers will conduct pre-mobilization training at Camp Shelby, Miss., ahead of a 400-day deployment to Iraq, where they will provide route-clearance and mission support roles as part of Operation New Dawn.

Oregon Governor Theodore Kulongoski, Maj. Gen. Raymond F. Rees, The Adjutant General, Oregon, and LaGrande Mayor Colleen Johnson, along with other Oregon National Guard leadership and local civic leaders are scheduled to attend the event.

Members of the public and the media are also encouraged to attend.

Following the ceremony, Soldiers will be bused through downtown LaGrande. The route will take the Soldiers on Fourth Street to Adams Ave. to Hwy 30, then to Interstate 84 at the Flying J Travel Center. The convoy will be escorted by members of the Patriot Guard Riders to the Idaho border.

Soldiers of the unit were deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III from Dec. 2004 to Nov. 2005. The Soldiers participated in over 3,000 combat patrols, assisted local leaders to establish local governments, and participated in over $20M in local construction projects.

The unit was also instrumental in Iraq's first democratic election.

The Battalion, with headquarters in La Grande, Ore., consists of units from Ontario, Baker City, La Grande, Pendleton, Hermiston, The Dalles, and Hood River. The unit was notified by the Department of Defense in April 2010 of their deployment to Iraq.

Soldiers from the unit participated in an intensive three-week pre-deployment training exercise at the Orchard Training Area near Gowen Field, Idaho in late August 2010.
