Oregon ATV Safety
An Oregon 4-H Youth Development Program
training


Oregon ATV Safety is a youth rider endorsement program developed by the 4-H Youth Development Program at Oregon State University with assistance from Team Oregon.
 
The program is managed from the OSU Extension Office in Redmond, Oregon by David White, PhD and OSU Associate Professor.
 
The program started May 1, 2011 and offers evaluation of rider skills to youth ages 6 to 15 on Class I quads and Class IV side-by-sides throughout the state.

Riders must have and fit their own quad, a DOT approved helmet, goggles, gloves, boots, long sleeve shirt, and full length pants.

NOTE: Because this is a relatively new feature, many training events may not show yet. Therefore we encourage you to also utilize the enrollment process for the course you want to sign up for to find additional training opportunities.

Quad (Class I) and Side-by- side (Class IV) Evaluation

The purpose of the Oregon ATV Safety Youth Rider Endorsement Program is to evaluate the mental and physical riding skills already possessed by young riders. Oregon ATV Safety Evaluators verify that rider skills meet, or exceed, Oregon’s minimum standards.
 
The endorsement class takes approximately two hours and emphasizes safe and ethical rider habits by covering several topics beyond the handling of a quad. This includes awareness of how rider behaviors and attitudes can affect our ability to ride on public lands.

The endorsement class includes pre-ride inspections, starting and stopping, turning (gradual and quick), weaving, emergency stopping, swerving, and riding over obstacles. Side-by-side evaluations are done by appointment only and can only be done on side-by-sides whose operator meets the manufacturer’s recommended age. To date, this is only the Polaris RZR 170.  Call the Oregon ATV Safety Program Director at 541-548-6088 to arrange for evaluation.

Have you never taken an evaluation or training course?
 
If you answered yes to these three questions, the ATV Program may be able to pay $35 of the $55 cost for you to take this evaluation course; leaving $20.00 out of pocket cost to your parent.
