Donovan D. Rypkema will speak on Economics, Sustainability and Historic Preservation. "Green Buildings" in the United States are attracting the attention of architects, builders, public officials and environmentalists. What is not broadly understood is that "green buildings" are only part of the larger sustainable development movement, which includes economic and cultural responsibilities in addition to environmental concerns. The event is sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, McMenamins, and Daniels Development Co.
Tickets are $10 and pre-registration is strongly recommended

Historic Homes Tour

Coordinated by Historic Deepwood Estate, a variety of local historic homes will be open to visit on May 10th. Tickets are $20.00 and are available by contacting Deepwood at 503 363-1835.  Advance tickets purchased by May 1st receive a $5.00 discount.  A map of participating homes will be provided upon ticket purchase.  Additionally, Historic Deepwood Estate, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, will hold a free Open House on May 10th from 11-4.

The 7th annual Austin to Bagby Hot Springs Cleanup includes 15 miles of road and river and includes cleanup at the site of the historic 1913 Bagby Guard Cabin that Northwest Forest Conservancy is in the process of restoring in cooperation with the Forest
Service.  Free donuts, coffee, and BBQ lunch.

The film competition features 18 of the world’s best films about archaeology, ancient cultures, and the indigenous world and is the only juried competition in its genre in the Western Hemisphere.

The City of Jacksonville, a National Historic Landmark, will celebrate National Preservation Month on Memorial Day Weekend with tours on Sunday and Monday to showcase some of the restoration work that has been completed on monuments, curbing and fencing. 75th Anniversary Celebration of the New Deal:  Driving and Walking Tours

2008 is the 75th anniversary of the inauguration of the New Deal. The New Deal programs
changed the face of the Mount Hood National Forest. Timberline Lodge was constructed as a WPA project and the campgrounds and trails constructed by the CCC are used by visitors to the forest today. In celebration of this momentous occasion, the National Forest is arranging a walking/driving tour of CCC/WPA-related sites. The tour will begin at the Zigzag Ranger Station with a 45 minute to one hour program and walking tour of the grounds led by USFS personnel and interpreters. It will then proceed to Tollgate Campground, on to the Mount Hood Center and Cultural Museum., and lastly, to Timberline Lodge.  The tours of Tollgate, the Museum and Timberline Lodge will be self guided. Visitors will be provided a map and driving instructions, as well as a commemorative passport.
 
Timberline Lodge will host an exhibit that highlights the contributions of the CCC and WPA to the Mt. Hood National Forest. The exhibit will feature historic photos, memorabilia, and tools used by the CCC workers.
 
This free event is sponsored by the Mt. Hood National Forest, Zigzag Ranger District, Friends of Timberline, Mt. Hood Cultural Center and Museum, RLK and Company.
