Oswald West open for day hikes and outdoor play
Camping in current location will remain closed; department will look for alternatives
Following a month-long public discussion, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department has decided to operate Oswald West State Park as a day-use only park. A million people a year visit the 2,500 acre park, on the north coast between Manzanita and Cannon Beach, for hikes, surfing, picnics and other outdoor play. The small, 30-site primitive campground inside the park -- closed due to the increasing risk of decayed, aging trees falling -- will remain closed to camping.

Managing for a healthy forest at Detroit Lake State Park
Detroit Lake State Park may see a little more sun in 2009. A tree thinning operation over the winter removed a number of trees in the campground and along the lake. The thinning opened up the forest canopy, which had become very dense. Tree crowding can lead to problems with disease and insect infestation, potential for storm damage and more.
You will see some new greenery, too. New trees and native vegetation have been planted to replace trees, restore ground cover, and screen campsites. Please watch your step!
The tree thinning was a joint project of the USDA Forest Service and Oregon State Parks.
