Habitat Conservation Plan areasIn response to comments received during public meetings and from the Habitat Conservation Plan steering committee, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department has reduced the quantity of western snowy plover management areas and the number of miles where plovers would be managed.

The original plan called for 23 plover management areas. This number has been reduced to 16 by deferring four unoccupied site, designating one as a wintering area only (which will not affect beach use), and combining several of the occupied sites. The map at right shows the location of the plover management areas that remain.

The sites deferred are:

  • Nestucca
  • North Spit Sand Lake
  • Bullards
  • Sixes River
The winter-only site is:

  • Camp Rilea
The combined sites are:

  • Siltcoos/Dunes Overlook/Tahkenitch
  • Bandon/New River
The boundaries of several sites have also been modified. The Pistol River site was shortened to incorporate only the property owned and managed by OPRD. The Bandon site was shortened on the north end to exclude approximately 0.5 miles south of the China Creek parking lot. Approximately 0.6 miles of New River’s southern boundary was shortened, essentially excluding the Floras Lake area.

The January 2004 draft HCP called for approximately 57 miles of the ocean shore to be managed for snowy plovers. The November 2004 revised HCP will call for up to 48 miles of ocean shore to be managed for snowy plovers.

The green areas are the unoccupied plover management areas, while the pink areas are occupied plover management areas. Go to site specific maps marked with an asterix to view HCP sites.
