GENERAL INFORMATION  
Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s mission is to provide and protect outstanding natural, scenic, cultural, historic and recreational sites for the enjoyment and education of present and future generations.

These positions are located at various parks around the state.  Please be sure to identify only those areas in which you are willing to work by marking the appropriate box on your Geographic Selection Sheet Attachment. 
  • By applying now, your name will be placed on a certified list.  Some park locations have immediate openings but the majority of positions are normally filled between May and the first two weeks of June.
  • In most instances on-site housing is NOT available, and in most cases in-person interviews will be required.

TO QUALIFY (Complete all boxes for each job listed in your work history to receive full credit)        
  • One year of experience (paid or unpaid) performing public contact or customer service duties (e.g. Teacher, Customer Service Representative, Salesperson, Receptionist, etc.) OR
  • One year (45 Quarter Hours / 30 Semester Hours) of college in any discipline.(List hours under  Education/Training History of the PD634).
 
NOTE: A combination of education and experience may substitute.
 
PURPOSE OF POSITION
 
The Ranger Aide represents OPRD in a professional manner and enhances the image of the department by communicating effectively with and providing services to visitors.  The Ranger Aide assists permanent staff by performing a variety of duties in the operation, maintenance, interpretation, rule enforcement and resource conservation of a state park or park areas, on a seasonal basis.
 
PRIMARY POSITION DUTIES
 
Ranger Aides may be assigned to perform any or all of the tasks listed below as determined by the park manager.
  • Visitor Services - Operate the computerized system to register visitors, assign overnight campsites or other park facilities, and collect and reconcile fees; Inform and educate park visitors about natural, historic and cultural resources; Conduct visitor programs such as guided tours, junior ranger programs, educational programs, and special events.
  • Visitor Safety/Rule Enforcement - Patrol park areas to protect and preserve resources; Ensure visitor safety by looking for and reporting safety hazards and rule violations; Explain park rules and regulations to visitors; May issue verbal or written warnings for violations of posted rules and regulations.
  • Park Maintenance Service - Maintain grounds and trails (for example:  mows, prunes, rakes, removes trash); Maintain buildings and facilities (for example:  clean restrooms and showers, paint, and make minor repairs); assist with maintaining utility systems; Operate and maintain equipment and tools.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
 
The following are requirements of the job and must be accomplished with or without reasonable accommodations:
 
Work is performed in all types of weather, in all types of terrain, will work irregular hours or evenings, weekends and holidays.  Need to be in good physical condition for physical, manual labor for both indoor and outdoor duties.  Must wear issued Park and Recreation Department uniform as regulated. Must wear all leather hard soled boots at all times must wear required safety equipment.  Must posses and maintain a current valid drivers license and drive a variety of vehicles, up to one ton; connect, disconnect various trailers used for equipment hauling and garbage; properly load and unload trailers and back trailers. Be prepared to drive in inclement weather conditions including severe snow and ice to get to work and while at work for several months each year.  May be assigned to work with department of corrections work crews, county corrections work crews, persons assigned community service work from a court judgment or other person working for time as a restitution in a judgment or youth corrections crews.
