Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s mission is to provide and protect outstanding natural, scenic, cultural, historic and recreational sites for the enjoyment and education of present and future generations.

- There is one (1) seasonal, full-time position with Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, this position is posted at Unity Lake State Park, in John Day, Oregon.
- This position is represented by the Service Employee International Union (SEIU).
- This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified people to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill multiple positions.
- This position is currently part of a classification study.

PRIMARY POSITION DUTIES
Visitor Services
- Prepare and process written forms and reports related to overnight camper registration;
- Collect directly from campers, revenues for camping, making correct change, complete camp reports, balance receipts and money, utilize safes for deposit of collected revenue, follow written cash handling procedures;
- Obtain visitor compliance with park rules and regulations through verbal and written communications;
- Provide both written and verbal information about local attraction and Oregon State Parks;
- Be able to provide first aid and other assistance during visitor or employee related emergencies and fill out required reports;
- Present interpretive programs.
Leadership
- Assigns work assignments;
- Works with the Unit Manager to plan, design and implement special projects as assigned;
- Tracks work in progress, serves as trainer to co-workers, keeps manager informed of ongoing work.
- Read blueprints, set up bids for work or materials, purchases materials;
- Acts as crew leader for field operations responsible for ensuring needed work being done in accordance with prescribed expectations;
- Works independently on assigned projects, makes decisions for schedules, time frames and material needs for priority projects.
Custodial
- Clean restrooms, showers, maintenance shops and interpretive centers by sweeping, washing, disinfecting and mopping floors, walls, ceilings and fixtures;
- Pick up litter, empty garbage cans, dispose of litter and garbage into appropriate receptacles;
- Remove debris from fireplaces, footpaths, parking areas etc. by sweeping, raking or blowing;
- Replenish supplies as needed, mix cleaning chemicals to specifications, utilize various chemicals according to written specifications maintain written records of supply usage.
Landscape Activities
- Maintain irrigation system: work would include moving heavy pumps, digging up water saturated sod and soil to repair pipe breaks, replace or clean turf valves, change sprinklers from area to area, clean sprinkler nozzles, set adjustable sprinkler nozzles, set adjustable sprinklers and monitor area irrigation;
- Mow lawns with small riding and push mowers;
- Fertilize plants and lawns by hand and with applicators using herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers;
- Irrigate lawns with hoses, sprinklers, remove pumps for repair;
- Install and repair underground lines and sprinklers;
- Plant annual and perennial vegetation;
- Prune trees and shrubs with hand tools, including chainsaws;
- Construct and maintain all types of fencing;
- Maintain grounds, footpaths and roadways;
- Repair grounds, which include filling holes, grading, leveling, seeding etc. using front-end loader, backhoe, dump trucks;
- Establish new lawn, shrub and display areas; work would include operation of dump trucks, tractor loader, raking shoveling, installation of irrigation piping, trenching, seeding and using planted sock;
- Replace, repair signs, monuments and markers, including staining, painting, routing, digging holes, mixing and pouring concrete, sanding, sawing and drilling.
Facility Maintenance
- Conduct yearly routine activities such as spring park start up, fall shut down, and seasonal operating maintenance activities with minimal supervision and guidance, which requires organization capabilities, ability to identify needed work, prioritization, and follow through, to ensure projects are completed according to expectations;
- Paint and or repair buildings, tables and stoves;
- Replace light bulbs, circuit breakers, switches and outlets;
- Repair plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, flushometers, PVC, ABS, copper and steel pipe, unclog water and sewer lines with force cups and hand or power snakes, replace faucet washers, hose bibs and valves;
- Construct or rehab trails, footpaths and small bridges;
- Record traffic counter and water readings, take chlorine residual tests, adjust chlorine as needed, take water samples;
- General building construction and or repair;
- Pick up litter, garbage and dispose of into appropriate containers;
- Remove debris from fireplaces, footpaths, parking areas by sweeping, blowing or raking.
Equipment
- Supervise the use of, operate and maintain all park equipment in sound working order, including routine oil changes, lubricating and greasing as required, sharpening blades, replacing belts, hoses ,tires, maintain by cleaning, washing, waxing etc..
Rehabilitation / Construction
- Repair/replace doors, fixtures, roofs, siding, windows etc.;
- Participate in construction activities which may include carpentry, plumbing, minor electrical, painting, masonry etc.;
- Major park facilities /grounds rehabilitation/construction which include installation of potable and irrigation water systems, asphalt, sewer systems, underground electric systems, building construction including foundations, framing and finish work, landscape development including grading, leveling, seeding, plantings, installation of gabions, rock walls and other revetments etc.;
- Prepare and paint inside and outside of various buildings using pressure washers, power paint sprayer, hand tools etc.;
- Read, understand and operate from standard blue prints and associated specifications;
- Perform any other assigned duty within the scope of this class.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Two years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction, landscaping).
- A Bachelor's degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Natural Resource Management,Environmental Studies or a related field may substitute for up to one year of experience.
- An Associate's degree in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management or Environmental Studies may substitute for up to six months of experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in, on and around buildings, facilities and grounds, inside and outside in all weather conditions. Occasionally works in office operating computers and other office equipment. Needs adequate vision and hearing, manual dexterity, communication and motor skills to perform the duties of the position, including emergency response situations. Walks up and down inclines and stairs, over rough, uneven, and slippery terrain or paved surfaces and over distances up to 5 miles. Works in stairwells and on ladders, scaffolds, and rooftops. Reaches above shoulder level and occasionally works on hands and knees. Bends, stoops, crouches, kneels, crawls, climbs, twists, pushes and pulls in regular performance of duties. Drives a variety of motorized vehicles. Maneuvers, manipulates, and operates hand and powered tools and heavy equipment. May sit or stand for long periods of time. May lift and move up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and up to 100 pounds or more with assistance. May work in congested work areas, confined spaces and remote locations. Frequently interacts with the public. Occasionally works alone, within phone or radio communication. May work irregular shifts (split, evenings, weekends, holidays) and overtime. Travels overnight to other parks, headquarters, or other agency facilities for training and meetings. May be exposed to environmental and chemical hazards, allergens, and odors standard to area of assignment, such as high noise, chemicals, and fumes requiring safety controls. Cleans up and disposes of human-generated waste, animal waste and carcasses. May be exposed to hostile and offensive language and actions from the public. Uses appropriate safety and personal protective equipment and follows established safety policies, practices and procedures. Performs duties of position with or without reasonable accommodation.
