Scappoose Bay Watershed Priority Fish Passage Correction
Fish Passage Improvement (2005)
Salmon License Plate Funds $174,572
Total Project Cost $374,572
The 85,000-acre Scappoose Bay watershed contains high quality habitat for five salmonid species, four of which are listed or proposed for listing under the Endangered Species Act. Following a comprehensive fish passage barrier assessment, the Scappoose Bay Watershed Council began a large-scale program to reopen currently inaccessible refuge habitat within the watershed. Through the support of salmon license plate funds from OWEB and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the council is correcting six road crossings, the first of many the council hopes to address. At project completion, native salmonids will be able to enjoy nearly eight miles of previously blocked habitat.

Miller Creek Fish Barrier Removal
Fish Passage Improvement (2005)
Salmon License Plate Funds $168,770
Total Project Cost $359,210
Once home to thriving populations of coho, chinook, chum, steelhead, and cutthroat trout, the Clatskanie River system has experienced dramatic losses in fish population in the past few decades. The system still offers, however, some of the best potential habitat for Lower Columbia coho and steelhead. Through salmon license plate funds from OWEB, the Lower Columbia River Watershed Council will remove an impassible concrete culvert from Miller Creek, a large tributary of the Clatskanie River, and install a new 60-foot bridge. When completed, replacement of this fish passage barrier will result in the opening of over six miles of quality spawning and rearing habitat for anadromous species, helping in the recovery of sensitive fish populations in the Clatskanie River system.
