| General Information |
|
The Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN) has a three-step approval process for nursing education programs.
- First, new programs apply to the OSBN for "Developmental Approval." (The criteria for Developmental Approval are described in Oregon Administrative Rule 851-021-0010(1).)
- Second, after meeting additional criteria (described in OAR 851-021-0010(2)), programs can request “Initial Approval.” At this point, programs are listed on the OSBN’s website and can begin enrolling students.
- Third, after the first class of students graduates and the program meets further criteria (OAR 851-021-0010(3 )), the program may receive "Final Approval."
The OSBN only approves Associate Degree, Bachelor’s Degree and Practical Nurse programs. For information on advanced practice nursing education, please refer to the Oregon Administrative Rules regarding Nurse Practitioners, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, and Clinical Nurse Specialists.
Approval may be withdrawn from a nursing education program if the program falls below the standards outlined in rule. The school is given a limited period in which to correct the situation. Examples of the type of problems that can lead to the withdrawal of approval are a program’s inability to keep qualified faculty on staff, or difficulty in maintaining an 85 percent first-attempt pass rate of graduates taking the National Council Licensure Exam.
Questions Students Should Ask
When considering a nursing program students should ask the school these questions:
- What are the admission criteria?
- What is the tuition?
- Can I easily transfer credits I earn to another school?
- What regional or national accreditations does the school/program hold?
- Does the nursing program have any agreements with a program at any other school?
