At the front of this machine adjacent to the play key you pushed to start this tape, there are four other keys. Near the left edge of the machine you will find a red key labeled with a raised “X”. This is the stop key, which shuts the machine off when you want to stop reading. When you are ready to start again press the green play key marked with a raised circle and the recording will continue from the point where you left off.
Rewind The second key from the left is the rewind key, it’s black and marked by a raised arrow pointing to the left. When this key is pressed your machine will move the tape rapidly to the left and you may hear garbled sounds. Pressing the rewind key allows you to go back and listen to previously heard text.
Fast Forward Moving to the right of the play key, you will find another black key marked by a raised arrow pointing to the right. This is the fast forward key. When this key is pressed down the tape will move rapidly to the right and garbled sounds may again be heard. The fast forward key allows you to skip over any portion of the tape you don’t want to hear.
Eject To release the play, rewind or fast forward key press the raised “X” stop key, also always press the stop key first before changing functions. The final key at the right is also black and without raised markings. It’s used to eject the cassette. To remove a cassette from the machine press the red raised “X” stop key on the left side of the keyboard then the smooth black eject key on the right. The door on the top of the machine will spring open and the cassette will pop forward.
Volume To the right of the eject key is a slightly recessed area containing 5 controls. Nearest the front is a volume control, which can slide left and right. To raise the volume slide the control to the right to lower the volume slide the control to the left.
Tone Behind the volume control is the tone control, which also slides left and right. For a deeper sound slide the control to the left, to increase the high sound slide it to the right.
Side Selector Behind the tone control is a “V” shaped rocker switch for side selection. To play sides 1 and 2 of any cassette push the switch down to the left. To play sides 3 and 4 of four side cassettes push this switch down to the right.
Speed Behind the side selector switch is another “V” shaped rocker switch, which controls the speed at which the cassette tape is played. Titles being added to the program are produced for playing at 15/16-inches per second. To play the 15/16-inches per second cassettes the speed switch should be pressed down to the left. Some titles produced for the program and those available commercially play at 1 7/8-inches per second. To play the faster 1 7/8-inches per second cassettes press the speed selector switch down to the right
The speed of the tape can be varied using the slide control nearest the rear of the machine. When this control is pushed all the way to the left the tape will play at the speed set by the speed switch, either 15/16 or 1 7/8 If this control is moved slightly to the right the tape will immediately will slow down advancing this control farther to the right gradually increases the speed from slower than normal to much faster than normal. The amount of speed change is from 20% slower up to 150% faster than normal.
Battery Your cassette book machine is equipped with a rechargeable battery pack, which must not be removed. When the power cord (located in the storage compartment in the rear of the machine) is plugged into a wall outlet battery charging is automatic. A full charge for a run down battery takes about 12 hours. After completely charging the battery the machine will operate up to 6 hours. It is recommended that you not leave the machine plugged in at all times.
Jacks On the right side of the cassette book machine is a panel of holes or jacks. The jacks can be used to connect other equipment to your cassette player each of the jacks has a raised letter or symbol beneath it. The jack nearest the front with a raised “R” below it allows use of a remote on/off control. Remote control attachments are available from the NLS for use by those patrons of the program meeting certain requirements as set forth from an application form available from your library or lending agency.
Auxiliary Output The second jack from the front marked by an raised “O” is an auxiliary output it allows the cassette book machine to be connected directly to a home sound system. Connecting cords may be obtained from a local audio supply store.
Auxiliary Input The third jack marked by a raised “I” is an auxiliary input and it is not used.
Headphones The forth and fifth jacks are for headphone use. Each is marked by a raised inverted “U”. Symbolizing a pair of headphones. The fourth jack accepts a mini plug like that on a transistor radio. The fifth jack accepts a quarter inch plug from headphones or a pillow speaker. Plugging into either jack will disconnect the speaker but volume can still be adjusted. Headphones, pillow speakers or special amplifiers are available only to readers meeting certain qualifications. Contact your library for further details.
Inserting a Cassette Most books produced by the library of congress have 4 tracks or sides of information recorded on each cassette. To play a 4 side book start each cassette with the Braille label up. Press down on the smooth eject key to open the door on top. To insert a cassette place it flat on the control keys with the thick edge facing you. Then push the cassette toward the back as far as it will go. Press straight down on the door until it locks in place. Tapes often become loose in shipment. Before playing any cassette it is a good idea to press the rewind key until the chattering sound stops and the tape stops moving. Then press the stop key and the cassette will be ready to play
To begin a cassette push the side selector switch down on the left and then press the play key. At the end of side 1 turn the cassette over and side 2 will be ready to play without further adjustment. At the end of side 2 push the side selector switch down to the right. Turn the cassette over again so the Braille is on the up and play side 3. At the end of side 3 turn the cassette over and side 4 will be ready to play without further adjustment. To hear the first side of the next cassette push the side selector down to the left. For 4 sided books that require several cassettes the first cassette begins with side 1 the second cassette with side 5 the third with side 9 and so on.
Automatic Shut Off This cassette book machine has a built in automatic shut off. The machine will turn itself off when the tape reaches the end or if the tape jams. When this happens release the play, rewind or fast forward key by pressing the raised “X” stop key. If the machine shuts off unexpectedly the cassette has probably just started to jam. If this occurs press the stop key then the rewind key. Wait a few seconds then press the stop key again and the tape should be ready to play. If the tape jams a second time it can be often be made to play without further difficulty by rewinding for a minute or more.
