Operating Instructions for the Easy Cassette Machine

This machine is called easy because it has controls that are very easy to master as well as some automatic features.

Volume Control
On the top of the machine near the front in the left hand corner is the sliding volume control, which you used to turn the machine on. The sound will get louder as you slide the control farther to the right and get softer as you slide the control to the left. If you slide the control all the way to the left hand corner you will stop the tape. Before you get accustomed to using the volume control you may hear a beeping sound. This means the sliding control is between the off position on the left and the play position toward the right. The tone will stop when you push the control all the way to the left and stop the tape or push it far enough to the right to start the cassette or resume playing after a pause.

Remember that when you are starting a cassette for the first time it may take up to a minute for the cassette to begin playing. When you resume listening to a cassette after the pause the reading will start immediately.

Review/Rewind Key To the right of the sliding volume control is a black key with a raised arrow pointing left. This is the review key. To replay part of the tape press this key down as far as it will go and the tape will rewind. If you haven’t pressed it hard enough to rewind you will hear several short beeps, if you hear a continuous tone while rewinding the machine is telling you the tape is rewound as far as it will go which is to the beginning of the side you were listening to. Release the key and the tape will start playing again

Side Selection After an hour and a half of playing you will hear the narrator tell you to turn the cassette over or to change the side selector switch because you have reached the end of the cassette side. You should ignore these instructions the machine you are using switches sides automatically. All you have to do is wait for about 30 seconds while the machines switches from one side to the next for you. You can listen up to 6 hours without touching the cassette and you never turn it over. A few seconds after the reading ends on the last recorded side of a cassette you will hear a long low tone and the machine will stop. If you have finished with the tape slide the volume control all the way to the left and the tape will automatically rewind to the beginning.

Removing a Cassette When the tape is finished rewinding you will hear a short tone. To remove the cassette open the cassette door by pushing it back as far as it will go. Push down firmly on the near edge of the cassette itself, then release the pressure and the cassette should pop up. If it doesn’t don’t try to pry it out, check to make sure that the volume control is in the off position and that the cassette door is completely open and try again. Remember that the cassette should never be removed until you are finished listening to it because each time you insert a cassette the machine will automatically rewind to the beginning of the first side.

Inserting a New Cassette To play a new cassette make sure that the volume control is in the stop position and the cassette door is pushed back as far as it will go. The spring loaded cassette platform should be in the up position to insert a tape. The platform is in the up position when the spindles do not protrude through the platform. If the platform is depressed so the spindles do protrude press down firmly on the platform until you hear a click and then release the platform so that it can pop up. Next put the cassette on the platform holding it so that the exposed tape edge is away from you and the raised dots are on the top of the cassette. If you insert the cassette with the raised dots down the sides of the book will be played in the wrong order. Push down on the cassette until you hear a click. If the cassette doesn’t go down easily check to make sure that it is right against the back of the platform. Pull the cassette door toward you until it clicks. Just after the door clicks into place the machine automatically rewinds the cassette to the beginning. When the cassette has been fully rewound you will hear a tone indicating the tape is ready to be played.

Play To start the tape slide the volume control to the right up to a minute may elapse before you hear the narration begin.
