LIBRARIAN
(Cataloging Services Librarian)

GENERAL INFORMATION
 
The Oregon State Library in Salem seeks a dynamic, team-oriented innovator for the position of Cataloging Services Librarian. This position is part of the Government Research team, which provides permanent access to Oregon government publications and serves the information needs of state employees.
 
The Cataloging Services Librarian has primary responsibility for original cataloging, classification, and subject analysis of materials in all formats. This consists mostly of Oregon state documents, both print and electronic, but includes other items acquired to support the mission of the Library. Additional responsibilities include authority work, archiving electronic resources, and assisting the team with best practices for effective access to all materials including web resources.

The State Library is an independent state agency governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees appointed by the Governor. The State Library's mission includes providing quality information services to Oregon state government, providing reading materials to blind and print-disabled Oregonians through Talking Book and Braille Services, and providing leadership, grants, and other assistance to improve local library service for all Oregonians through Library Development Services.
 
The State Library is a team-based organization.  The Cataloging Services Librarian works in a team environment with the support of a Team Coordinator and a Program Manager.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Primary duties of this position include:
  • Original cataloging of library materials including description, classification, and subject analysis;
  • Authority control with an emphasis on name authorities for Oregon government agencies;
 
Additional duties of this position include:
  • Assistance with archiving online resources to ensure reliable access;
  • Active participation in workgroups that process, coordinate, and provide access to Oregon government publications; and
  • Regular team activities including participation in committees, workgroups, and task forces appropriate to the interests and experience of the librarian.
 
DECISION-MAKING

With coaching from the Program Manager and in a team environment as a team player, this librarian makes decisions in connection with serving clients in general and specialized area information resources and services, interprets written policy, and suggests equipment and supplies for purchase. The employee is afforded considerable latitude in determining methods and resources to accomplish program goals.  The daily work routine requires constant decision making and setting work and professional activity priorities, balancing multiple demands for services, and fulfilling responsibilities outlined in the position description. 
 
The Librarian reaches consensus with team members about policy, performance management, and prioritization of team activities. Performance guidelines used are obtained through expertise gained from their educational and professional background, as well as through an understanding of the mission, goals and objectives of the program.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Typical office environment
  • Extensive daily use of personal computers and related office equipment
  • Extended periods of use and exposure to video display monitors
  • Some public contact, especially with state agencies and the library community
  • Occasional meetings at other state agencies in Salem and other locations
  • Occasional irregular hours and travel
  • May need to lift and carry library materials up to 10 pounds and move book carts weighing up to 45 pounds in stacks or office space.
 
TO QUALIFY
 
Your PD 100 application form will be reviewed to verify that you have the minimum qualifications stated in this section:
 
An American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master of Library Science degree and at least three years progressively responsible cataloging experience in multiple formats. The candidate should demonstrate familiarity with library classification systems (Dewey preferred), Library of Congress subject headings, AACR2 cataloging standards, and OCLC cataloging products and services.
 
The ideal candidate will also demonstrate experience in at least three of the following:
  • Working with multiple modules of an integrated library system (preference for experience with III),
  • Authority control,
  • Description and archiving of online resources,
  • Working with government documents, or
  • Web content description including metadata assignment and application of controlled vocabulary.

The outstanding candidate will be an energetic self-starter with good communication and interpersonal skills, who is a reliable, responsible and well organized worker. A high level of comfort with a variety of software packages and technology is also required.

 QUALIFYING QUESTIONS
 
You must respond to the following exam questions. Respond to each of the items individually and completely and number your responses to correspond with the questions.
 
  1. Please describe training and experience which has prepared you to perform sophisticated original cataloging activities. Include experience with non-print formats, electronic resources, government publications, authority control, subject analysis, and classification.
 
  1. The technical services workgroups at the Oregon State Library are highly collaborative and include a variety of professional and paraprofessional staff. Please describe your approach to teamwork in cataloging, including communication strategies and priority setting techniques.
 
  1. What do you see as the primary purpose of library cataloging? How do you approach your work to ensure that this purpose is met? 

THE APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS
 
Applications will be reviewed and answers to the qualifying questions evaluated by a screening committee. Based on this evaluation, the most suitable applicants will be interviewed. The State Librarian will make the final appointment.
