Marine Board Honors One of Their Own
The Oregon State Marine Board honored law enforcement officers and volunteers from across the state at their annual post season conference on October 17, inBend.  One of the conference organizers, Bernie Altishin, was surprised when recognized with multiple awards.    In 2007, Bernie Altishin volunteered a total of 860 hours, which included a boat tour of the Willamette River with Congresswoman Darlene Hooley.  Additionally, he operated the Marine Board’s boat to film a rescue re-enactment video featuring Oregon State Police heroes.  The re-enactment video was shown at the 2007 Real Hero’s Breakfast coordinated by the Willamette Chapter of the Red Cross, which honors local heroes in the community.  For his volume of donated hours and willingness to lend a hand for special events, Altishin received the Volunteer of the Year Award.

Altishin also received one of the Marine Board’s most honored awards –the Tom Rice Award. The award is named for the late Deputy Tom Rice, who was a well-liked and respected marine deputy and instructor who served Josephine County and the Marine Board for years.  He was killed in a helicopter accident while on duty in 2002.

“For over 15 years, Bernie has been an integral part of marine law enforcement training throughout the state,” said Dale Flowers, Law Enforcement Coordinator for the Marine Board.  Altishin provided extensive training that included the Marine Law Enforcement Academy, drift boat school, jet boat school, and breath testing instrument training, statewide. Flowers added, “All marine patrol courses require a significant amount of planning and preparation. Bernie has the ability to put students at ease, so they can really absorb a lot of information.”
