New Willamette 100 Foot Rule in Force, Canby to Newberg
For Immediate Release -5/27/09

A rule adopted in September 2008 by the Oregon State Marine Board is now in force on the Willamette River between Canby and Newberg. The rule requires boaters to operate at a “slow-no-wake” speed within 100 feet of a private dock, moorage or boathouse between the upper end of Willow Island near Canby and the Highway 219 Bridge at Newberg.

The Willamette River is generally between 500 and 700 feet wide in this area. The rule doesn’t prohibit specific activities, but it does create a buffer between private docks and boats operating at speed. This area of the Willamette River is patrolled by Clackamas and Yamhill county marine law enforcement.

The portion of the new rule that prohibits use of wake-enhancing devices in this area will go into effect January 1, 2010.
