Marine Board Approves Grant for Final Phase of the M. James Gleason Boat Ramp
For Immediate Release -7/27/11

The Oregon State Marine Board approved a grant for METRO, on June 27 at their quarterly meeting held in Sisters, OR.

Metro applied for, and received a grant for a six-stall flush restroom and asphalt parking lot improvements at the M. James Gleason boat ramp along the Columbia River.  Metro is renovating this facility and completed a new entry/exit road, a new wave attenuation wall and relocated the transient tie-up and moorage.  This grant is part of the final phase of Metro’s master plan, developed in 2001, for the site that serves all boaters. The M. James Gleason boat ramp is the second most popular boat launch in Multnomah County.

In addition, Marine Board staff are coordinating with Metro to include installation of a boat wash station in proximity to the new restroom.  The cost of a boat wash station is estimated at $35,000-$45,000 and would be funded by the Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Permit Program.  Motorboats that are registered with the Marine Board pay a $5 surcharge on their registration fee that goes toward aquatic invasive species prevention efforts, such as boat wash stations.  Manually powered boats also contribute to the program and are required to carry an aquatic invasive species prevention permit when operating their paddlecraft.

The Board approved $233,900 in state boater funds combined with $9,500 of in-kind contributions, $330,500 of applicant cash and $800,000 in federal Sport Fish Restoration funds, administered by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, for a project total of $1,373,900.

The Oregon State Marine Board is funded entirely by user fees, and the revenue generated from the fees goes back to boaters in the form of boating facility improvements, law enforcement services, and education and outreach.
