Marine Board Approves Proposed Outfitter/Guide Rules
For Immediate Release -10/28/11
The Oregon State Marine Board approved proposed rules to the Outfitter and Guide Program at a special Board meeting October 25 in Eugene.
In February, the Board convened the Guide Advisory Committee (GAC), as defined in Chapter 704 of the Oregon Revised Statute, to review the Outfitter and Guide Program.  Marine Board staff conducted a series of regional workshops with guides and outfitters to discuss issues related to the current administrative rules through the spring and summer months.  Marine Board staff and members of the GAC gathered feedback from those meetings and developed proposed rules that the Marine Board unanimously approved.
The program rule changes are considered a significant overhaul of the program that has not been updated in over 25 years.  These program changes will improve business practices, accountability of Guides and Outfitters, and program operations within the agency.
Vernon Grieve, an outfitter and guide from the lower Rogue River and member of the Rogue River Guide Association, was present at the Board meeting and supports the proposed rule changes.  “This will add more credibility to guides and build integrity for the industry.  These rules and improvements will help retain the competent law abiding guides who care about doing things right, and weed out the people who don’t.”
