WHAT WE DO
The Oregon State Police provides specially trained and qualified Arson  investigators who provide expertise in conducting complex arson investigations.

Additionally, The Arson/Explosives Bomb Squad provides statewide response to bomb and other explosives related calls for service.
  1. Bomb Squad Public Safety Resource Notice
  2. Handling a Bomb Threat Call

Program Approaches
By increasing interagency cooperation and maintaining a close cooperative working relationship with federal, state and local fire service and law enforcement, we will provide a strong network of partners committed to one another´s successful resolution of arson-related crimes, this will result in arson arrests and convictions.

A strong education/intervention/enforcement program will reduce the number of juvenile-related fire/explosive incidents and result in safer schools, neighborhoods and communities.

We have identified strategic geographical locations for statewide section response, allowing investigators to respond in a timely manner and within reasonable expectations of the fire service or law enforcement.

The Arson/Explosives Section will provide vigorous enforcement of Oregon´s laws relative to arson/explosives-related crimes.  This section will also facilitate the most effective means of arson/explosives prosecution by coordinating the efforts of local, state and federal prosecutors.

Outcomes
By identifying the most common motivating factors contributing to the crime of Arson, our investigative efforts often result in the quick resolution of criminal fire investigations, and reduce the financial loss to program customers, such as the insurance industry.

Arson/Explosives Section Customers
Citizens:  benefit both through community awareness programs and through a reward program by which they can report arson-related information to authorities.  This allows for aggressive enforcement of arson/explosive-related laws and provides for a safer and more livable Oregon.

Businesses:  such as the timber industry, are often targeted for arson-related fires.  By removing the arson element, their losses can be curtailed.

The Insurance Industry:  benefits through loss reduction by successfully identifying arson for profit cases.

Law Enforcement and Fire Services Agencies:  receive the benefit of assistance in identifying the origin and cause of fires.  They also receive assistance with their training needs and with the investigation and prosecution of arson-related crimes.
