A John Day-area man remains in custody in Grant County related to a Saturday morning homicide that left a 32-year old man dead. Names of the suspect and victim are being released and the investigation is continuing.
On August 16, 2008 at 11:37 a.m. John Day Police Department responded to a reported shooting at 161 NE Elm Street in John Day. Police and emergency medical personnel arrived and found a deceased male identified as JOSE CEJA MEDINA, age 32, from John Day. The victim died from multiple gunshot wounds.
At approximately 11:45 a.m. John Day police arrested JESSE BRATCHER, age 25, from John Day, on charges relating to the shooting death of the victim. A 19-year old female passenger was also detained and later released.
According to John Day Police Chief Rich Tirico, BRATCHER and a female acquaintance went to the victim's home in the late morning hours on Saturday and confronted MEDINA. During the confrontation, BRATCHER fatally shot MEDINA in the front yard of his home. Numerous witnesses reported hearing gunshots and a heated argument before the shooting. Following the shooting, BRATCHER and his girlfriend left the scene and were stopped moments later by John Day police and detained.
BRATCHER is being held on charges at the Grant County Jail pending an initial court appearance.
Oregon State Police troopers from the John Day, Baker City and Ontario responded to assist in the investigation along with Oregon State Police Crime Lab Forensic Division personnel from Ontario. Grant County Sheriffs Deputies also assisted with this ongoing investigation.
