A St. Helens-area Oregon State Police (OSP) Fish & Wildlife trooper received the division's "Fish & Wildlife Trooper of the Year" award for 2006 presented today by Captain Walt Markee, OSP Fish & Wildlife Division Director.
"Trooper LUKE SCHWARTZ was nominated for this first-ever award not only by division supervisors but also by his fellow peers," said Captain Markee. "He gives 110% every day, works closely with the media to inform the public of fish & wildlife enforcement issues, and is an excellent representative of this division and the OSP."
Criteria for the award included professionalism, dedication to citizens and natural resources of our State, and work ethic. Nominations were received from around the State and then reviewed by regional and General Headquarters staff before the award winner was selected.
In addition to a plaque presented today by Captain Markee at the St. Helens work site, Trooper SCHWARTZ will spend a week in Washington State as part of an exchange program with their fish & wildlife enforcement agency. Information and lessons learned during that exchange program will be shared with his fellow OSP fish & wildlife troopers at a future divisional training session.
Trooper LUKE SCHWARTZ, age 32, joined the OSP in July 2000 and was initially assigned in the Fish & Wildlife Division at the OSP Albany Area Command office. In August 2002, he transferred to the St. Helens work site but was one of over 100 troopers laid off January 31, 2003. Trooper SCHWARTZ was recalled five months later and continued working at the St. Helens work site.
The primary responsibility of the Fish & Wildlife Division is enforcement of fish, wildlife, and commercial fishing laws and protection of natural resources. The members of the Fish and Wildlife Division also enforce traffic, criminal, boating, livestock and environmental protection laws in addition to responding to emergency situations.
