The driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal traffic crash early Sunday morning on Highway 38 about six miles west of Elkton remains in critical condition early Monday morning at a Eugene-area hospital. The passenger victim's name is being released now that he has been positively identified and next of kin notification completed.

On August 26, 2007 at approximately 3:50 a.m. a 2003 Dodge Dakota pickup driven by STEVEN ROY GORDON, age 29, from Drain, was eastbound on Highway 38 near milepost 28 rounding a slight right curve when, for unknown reasons, it drifted onto the right shoulder. The pickup drove about 140 feet before going down an embankment where the passenger compartment impacted several trees.

GORDON was critically injured and transported to Sacred Heart Hospital.

The passenger identified as MICHAEL RAY CRIBBINS, age 33, from Yoncalla, was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was using safety restraints.

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Roseburg Area Command office are continuing the investigation with the assistance of an OSP collision reconstructionist. Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Elkton Fire Department, and ODOT assisted at the scene.
