A Coos Bay-area man died Wednesday night from injuries suffered earlier in a single vehicle crash the previous day on Cape Arago Highway at Coos Head Road. The crash scene was found by a pedestrian approximately 15 hours after the crash may have occurred.
On November 28, 2007 at about 8:00 a.m. a motor vehicle crash was reported on Cape Arago Highway at Coos Head Road in Coos County. Preliminary investigation indicates the crash occurred on November 27th prior 5:00 p.m. when a 1994 Suzuki Sidekick driven by CHARLES PATRICK SHIRTCLIFF, age 61, from Coos Bay, was westbound on Cape Arago Highway and attempted to turn right onto Coos Head Road. SHIRTCLIFF lost control of his vehicle and rolled down the embankment coming to rest approximately thirty feet from the roadway.
A pedestrian walking in the area located the vehicle and notified police.
Statements made by SHIRTCLIFF indicated that the crash occurred prior to 5:00 p.m. on November 27th. Evidence suggests that safety restraints were not being used at the time of the crash.
EMS personnel indicated that the victim was located partially ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay where later died from hypothermia.
Oregon State Police troopers from the Coos Bay Area Command office are completing the investigation.
