12/01/2006
Lieutenant Gregg Hastings
Public Information Officer
Office: (503) 731-3020 ext. 247

The search for the JAMES KIM family reported missing since November 25, 2006 after last being heard from in Oregon is continuing. State, county, and city police agencies are working together in an attempt to develop leads and conduct area searches.

The family members JAMES KIM, age 35, KATI KIM, age 30, PENELOPE KIM, age 4, and SABINE KIM, a 7 months, failed to return to San Francisco from a trip to the Pacific Northwest. They were traveling in a silver 2005 Saab 92X station wagon displaying California personalized plates "DOESF". They were last believed to be in the Portland area on November 25th enroute to Gold Beach to stay at the Tu Tu Tun Lodge. The family never arrived and has failed to return home in San Francisco.

On Friday, December 1st, Oregon State Police troopers have been checking State Highways that run from Interstate 5 to the Oregon coast and along Highway 101. Troopers have been patrolling these highways in southwest Oregon looking for any sign of the family, their vehicle, and any indication that the vehicle may have traveled off these highways and out of plain sight. In addition, troopers checked hotels and resorts on the south coast for any information to help in this case.

Oregon State Police, working in conjunction with Portland Police Bureau and San Francisco Police Department, have a toll-free number to call from within Oregon for any tips to help locate the missing family and their vehicle. Anyone with information may call Oregon State Police Northern Command Center dispatch at 800-452-7888.

Photographs of the family members and the type of vehicle they were believed to be operating have been distributed to Oregon media west of the Cascade Mountains to the coast.

Search efforts have been very busy in Curry County where Gold Beach, the family's reported destination, is located. The following is information from a Curry County Sheriff's Office news release sent out this afternoon:

Due to recent storms, including snow at the higher elevations, a search of the Bear Camp Road was started.
The Curry County Sheriff's Office using 4x4 vehicles started up Bear Camp Road and were able to reach about milepost 18 where the snow and ice stopped their units. Josephine County then called for their Sno-Cat to respond, as there is about 20 miles of road the law enforcement was not able to cover.
The Coos County Sheriff's Office sent 4x4 vehicles to the Agness Pass area from their county, and also had 4x4 vehicles go into the Eden Valley area to travel as far as they could past Mount Bolivar. Coos County Sheriff's Office provided this search as the Forest Service roads through this remote part of SW Oregon intersect with each other.
OERS (Oregon Emergency Response System) was contacted, as this was a mutual aide search operation. OERS contacted the Oregon National Guard Air Unit who has deployed a Blackhawk helicopter to conduct an aerial search of roads in the Bear Camp Road area.
The Curry County Sheriff's Office has been in contact with Portland Police and San Francisco Police Missing Persons units exchanging information. Those units have determined that the cell phones and credit cards of the KIM family have not been used since the 25th.
Members of the KIM family have contracted with one or more helicopter companies to fly the major roads from Interstate 5 to Highway 101, specifically Highway 42, Highway 38, and Highway 126.

Questions regarding the Curry County area search should be directed to Lieutenant Dennis Dinsmore at (541) 247-3242.
