Fatal Auto / Pedestrian Crash - Highway 58 west of Dexter

Oregon State Police troopers investigated a fatal auto / pedestrian crash Friday evening on Highway 58 just west of Dexter in which a female died from her injuries. Next of kin have been notified and the victim is identified as JANICE RUTH SANDERS, age 68, from Dexter.
 
On December 1, 2006 at approximately 6:30 p.m., a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by COREY N. RUSSELL, age 21, from Cottage Grove, was westbound on Highway 58 near Rattlesnake Road in the right hand lane when it encountered SANDERS walking from the south side of the highway to the north side. The victim was walking in the right hand lane when RUSSELL saw her. RUSSELL swerved to the left, nearly missing the victim but the passenger side mirror struck the victim.
 
SANDERS was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital where she was pronounced deceased about 30 minutes later.
 
RUSSELL was not injured. He was using safety restraints. Four passengers in the Tahoe were also not injured.
 
The area where the crash occurred is unlit and dark.
 
Oregon State Police troopers from the Springfield Area Command office are continuing the investigation. ODOT and Dexter Fire Department assisted at the scene. One lane was closed about two hours.
