A Warm Springs man was killed and another person taken into custody following a single vehicle rollover crash Friday night on Highway 97 near the Wasco / Sherman County line.
On December 1, 2006 at approximately 7:43 p.m., a report was received of a single vehicle crash on Highway 97 near milepost 49. Preliminary investigation by Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers indicates a 1987 Buick four-door driven by JOSEPH G. CRAIG, age 41, from Warm Springs, was northbound negotiating a slight curve when it veered off the right side of the highway. The car crashed into a steep rock embankment and rolled several times, coming to rest on its top in the southbound lane.
The passenger, TONY JULIUS GILBERT, age 57, from Warm Springs, was pronounced deceased about two hours after the reported crash. Safety restraint use information is undetermined.
CRAIG was transported by ambulance to Mid-Columbia Medical Center for treatment of injuries. Safety restraint use information is not available at this time. Upon release at 2:10 a.m., CRAIG was taken into custody and lodged in NORCOR (Northern Regional Correctional Facility in The Dalles) for Manslaughter in the First Degree, Reckless Driving, and Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor.
Oregon State Police troopers from The Dalles Area Command are continuing the investigation in cooperation with the Wasco County District Attorney's Office.
Sherman and Wasco County Sheriff's Offices, along with ODOT, assisted at the scene. The highway was closed about one hour.
