| Man Arrested After Attempt to Steal Handgun at Salem-Area Gunshow | ||

Lieutenant Gregg Hastings Public Information Officer Office: (503) 731-3020 ext. 247 An Oregon State Police trooper arrested a north Portland man Saturday afternoon after he stole a handgun on display at a gunshow held at the State Fairgrounds and attempted to flee. The man, who is currently on post-prison supervision related to robbery and aggravated theft convictions, was chased by several people until he was successfully detained by security and witnesses. On December 2, 2006 at approximately 4:20 p.m., RICHARD STRAUB, age 53, from north Portland, entered a gunshow held on State Fairgrounds' property in Salem. As STRAUB was near a gun display he allegedly took a .45 caliber Taurus handgun and placed it in his waistband while the victim was not looking. STRAUB began to leave and was confronted by four men who witnessed the theft. The victim and four witnesses chased STRAUB. As he ran from the building, STRAUB pushed a security guard in his attempt to escape. With the help of the witnesses and victim, security personnel was able to restrain STRAUB until officers arrived. OSP Trooper Mark Davie took STRAUB into custody for Theft in the First Degree, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Robbery in the Third Degree, and Burglary in the Second Degree. In addition, his probation officer placed a Probation Violation detainer to hold him in custody at the Marion County Jail. The handgun, valued at nearly $450, was returned to the victim. ### www.oregon.gov/OSP ###
