| Fatal Traffic Crash - Interstate 5 north of Gold Hill |

One person was killed and the driver critically injured in a single vehicle crash northbound on Interstate 4 north of Gold Hill. Alcohol is being investigated as a possible contributing factor.
On December 3, 2006 at approximately 2:28 a.m., a 1995 Kia Sophia driven by ADAN CHAVEZ ABUNDEZ, age 21, from Grants Pass, was northound on Interstate 5 near milepost 43 when, for an unknown reason, it hit the right side guardrail, crossed the highway striking the center concrete barrier, and then returned across the highway where it went through a fence and about 300 feet into a field.
CHAVEZ ABUNDEZ was critically injured. He was transported by Mercy Flights ground ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford. Safety restraint use is to be determined.
The passenger, identified as JUAN FIGUEROA LEON, age 24, from Grants Pass, was criticaly injured and transported by ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased upon arrival. Safety restraint use is to be determined.
Oregon State Police troopers from Central Point and Grants Pass are continuing the investigation with the assistance of the Jackson County District Attorney's Office. Additional assistance at the scene provided by Jackson County Medical Examiner, Gold Hill Police Department, and ODOT.
The highway was not blocked but the concrete center barrier was damaged.
