A previously reported missing woman, KATHLEEN M. "KITTIE" LEMCKE, age 48, from Canyon City, was found deceased Friday morning by a central Oregon helicopter crew in her overturned pickup about 10 miles east of Prineville.
On December 8, 2006, Air Life of Oregon, out of Bend, offered their aircraft to help in the search for a missing Canyon City woman. At about 11:00 a.m., the Air Life crew spotted a pickup on its top in a creek that was not visible from the highway. The aircraft landed nearby and the crew checked the vehicle, discovering the occupant deceased.
Oregon State Police troopers and Crook County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene near milepost 37.
Initial investigation indicates a 1997 Ford F150 pickup driven by LEMCKE was eastbound on US Highway 26 near milepost 37 when it lost control and collided with a concrete bridge abutment. The pickup flipped over and came to rest on its top in Marks Creek below the bridge.
LEMCKE was positively identified as the driver. Safety restraint use remains under investigation.
OSP and Crook County Sheriff's Office were assisted at the scene by Crook County Fire & Rescue and ODOT.
OSP troopers from the Prineville office are continuing the investigation.
Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmer thanks the media for the coverage when LEMCKE was reported missing. In addition, he extends his appreciation to Air Life of Oregon for the concern and voluntary use of their aircraft to help locate LEMCKE.
