On Thursday, December 7th, Allstate Insurance Company presented the Arson Section detectives of the Oregon State Police (OSP) with eight new combustible gas detectors to assist in arson investigations.
"These devices will help us more quickly identify the use of accelerants used to start fires," said Sergeant Steven Sigurdson, OSP Arson/Explosives Section manager. "We are grateful to Allstate for providing us with these useful tools to help us with our arson investigations throughout Oregon."
The detectors – worth approximately $275 a piece – will be utilized by detectives in the following communities throughout the state of Oregon, including Portland, Salem, Medford/Central Point, Bend and Pendleton.
Arson is recognized as the highest dollar loss crime and the most violent means of loss of life to the citizens of Oregon. The Oregon State Police provide specially trained and qualified investigators who provide expertise in conducting complex arson investigations. Since January 2000, the Oregon State Police has investigated more than 1,300 fires, averaging 190 calls a year over that time period. Approximately 55 percent of those fires were determined to be arson.
