A 17-year old male juvenile was taken into custody Wednesday morning by Oregon State Police (OSP), with the assistance of John Day police officers, after he allegedly assaulted a 16-year old female in the parking lot at Grant Union High School. The female victim was examine released at a local hospital for minor injuries.

On December 13, 2006 at approximately 8:35 a.m., OSP troopers and officers from John Day Police Department responded to a reported assault at Grant Union High School near John Day. After arriving at the scene, an OSP trooper took a 17-year old male juvenile into custody after an investigation revealed the suspect assaulted a 16-year old female student in her car at the school parking lot.

OSP Sergeant Gordon Larson of the John Day Outpost credits the quick actions of a veteran female teacher and a 17-year old male student, who is a member of the football and track team, with preventing further injury to the female victim. The teacher and student heard the girl's scream from within the school and rushed out to the parking lot to her aid.

"They disregarded any danger to themselves and rushed to her aid without hesitation, likely ending this situation before it escalated further," said Sergeant Larson.

After being taken into custody, the suspect was transported by OSP to Grant County Juvenile authorities who then took him to the Umatilla Youth Detention Center in Pendleton. He will be detained pending an appearance for Coercion, Assault in the Fourth Degree, Strangulation, and Menacing. The suspect was a student at the school and knew the victim.

Oregon State Police and John Day Police Department are continuing the investigation.
