Fatal Traffic Crash - Highway 101 North of Waldport
12/14/2006
Lieutenant Kelly Collins
Oregon State Police - Newport
Office: (541) 265-5354

A 79-year old Waldport-area man died early Thursday afternoon when his car was struck by another vehicle as it pulled out onto Highway 101 from a side road about two miles north of Waldport.

Preliminary investigation by Oregon State Police indicated that on December 14, 2006 at approximately 12:03 p.m., a 1994 Plymouth Acclaim driven by ROBERT GORDON LARSON, age 79, from Waldport, was pulling out from Tawn Mar Drive on the east side of Highway 101. Upon seeing the Plymouth pulling out onto the highway, a northbound 2001 Honda Accord driven by JESSICA S. JOHNSON, age 21, from Waldport, attempted to slow down but crashed into the driver's side of the Plymouth. After impact, both vehicles spun around and came to rest in the southbound lane.

LARSON was using safety restraints and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
JOHNSON was using safety restraints and her car's airbag deployed. She received minor injury. No information is available as to if she was transported for treatment.
At the time of the crash, there were high winds and heavy rain but these conditions do not appear to be a factor.

Oregon State Police troopers from the Newport Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Seal Rock Fire Department, and ODOT assisted at the scene. The southbound lane was closed about three hours.
