Oregon State Police investigated a single vehicle rollover crash Saturday afternoon on Interstate 5 about four miles south of Sutherlin in which a Sutherlin-area man died.

On December 16, 2006, at approximately 12:50 p.m., a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu four-door driven by CLIFFORD BAER, age 82, from Sutherlin, was northbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 131 in the right lane when, for unknown reasons, it attempted to pass another vehicle on the freeway's outside shoulder. While passing the vehicle on the shoulder BAER lost control causing his car to go across both northbound lanes and into the grassy center median. The Chevrolet Malibu came into contact with a cable guardrail on the southbound side of the center median. The Chevrolet Malibu flipped over the guardrail coming to rest upside down in the southbound left lane.

BAER sustained fatal injuries and safety restraint useage is unknown at this time.

Oregon State Police troopers from the Roseburg Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Any witnesses that may have seen the crash is asked to contact OSP Senior Trooper Russell Phillips at 541-440-3334.

OSP was assisted by Douglas County Fire District and ODOT. The left southbound lane was closed for approixmately 2 1/2 hours. Traffic was flowing through utiliziing the right southbound lane.
