Five OSP Recruits to Graduate from Basic Police Training at DPSST
12/19/2007
Lieutenant Eric Judah
Training Division
Office: (503) 378-4485

The Oregon State Police (OSP) will graduate five recruit troopers from the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) basic police training program, Friday, December 21st. The morning graduation ceremony marked the completion of the third fully-integrated basic police class facilitated by DPSST – which provides statutorily-required basic training to newly-hired city police officers, county sheriff's deputies and OSP troopers.

Superintendent Timothy McLain pointed out that these five new recruits were hired to fill current vacant trooper positions as the agency continues an aggressive recruitment effort to fill current vacancies in addition to 100 new trooper positions during the next two years.

"The Department continues to look for men and women who have the skill and desire to be future Oregon State Police troopers," Superintendent McLain said. "This is an exciting time for those individuals who have what it takes for this job."

The following five recruit troopers, four assigned to Patrol Services Division (PSD) and one assigned to Fish & Wildlife Division (FWD), will report to their assignments at these locations:
  • Banks Work Site – (PSD) Recruit Michael Vanrnterghem, age 24
  • Gold Beach Work Site – (FWD) Recruit Clifford Barden, age 28
  • La Grande Area Command – (PSD) Recruit Grant Jackson, age 29
  • Portland Area Command – (PSD) Recruit Jose Cortez, age 31
  • Roseburg Area Command – (PSD) Recruit Daniel Wells, age 21

Since January 2007, OSP has integrated recruit trooper training with newly hired city and county officers at the Oregon Public Safety Academy. In the past, OSP conducted its own recruit training course for new hires; however, with the construction of the new training academy the new OSP recruits are run through the single, statewide training program.

The Basic Police Class No. 298 graduation will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Oregon Public Safety Academy, 4190 Aumsville Highway, in Salem.

Anyone interested in becoming an Oregon State Police Trooper may obtain more information on the OSP web site in the "Now Hiring" section.
