A Canyonville-area man reportedly died from injuries suffered Thursday afternoon when he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to remove some debris from a traffic lane northbound Interstate 5 about two miles south of Myrtle Creek. According to Legacy Emanuel Hospital, OELRICH died early Friday morning after he was transferred from the Roseburg area.

Preliminary investigation by Oregon State Police troopers indicates on December 21, 2006 aproximatley 2:00 p.m., DAVE OELRICH, age 61, from Canyonville, had stopped his vehicle off Interstate 5 near milepost 103 and was attempting to remove a piece of debris from the freeway. As OELRICH was attempting to get off the travel lane, he was struck by a 1999 Dodge van driven by PHILLIP SEEHAWER, age 16, from Applegate.

OELRICH was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg with critical injuries, then later transferred to air to the Portland-area hospital. OELRICH was reportedly a retired Myrtle Creek police chief.

SEEHAWER was not injured.

Road conditions at the time were clear and dry. The freeway makes a wide curve to the north in this location, making visibility limited.

An Oregon State Police collision reconstructionist continuing the investigation with the assistance of troopers from the Roseburg Patrol Office. Douglas County Sheriff's Office and ODOT assisted at the scene. No citations have been issued at this time.
