Five people, two adults and three children, died Friday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 97 about fifteen miles south of the Diamond Lake junction. Three others were transported for treatment of possible or minor injuries, and the highway was reopened about 6:45 p.m. The victim's names, all family members from Davis, California, are being released following positive identification and next of kin notification by Yolo County Coroner's Office.
The victims are identified as driver JOHN STEPHEN HANSON, age 43; right front passenger, VICTORIA HANSON, age 44; and rear passengers, MICHAEL HANSON, age 8, ELIZABETH HANSON, age 12, and MATTHEW HANSON, age 10. On December 29, 2006 at approximately 2:00 p.m., a 2004 Ford Expedition with California license plates containing the HANSON family was northbound on Highway 97 near milepost 231 when it lost control on an icy stretch and spun broadside into the southbound lane. The Ford Expedition was struck in the passenger side by a southbound Kenworth truck towing a box trailer loaded with generators. After impact, the Ford Expedition was struck by a northbound 2002 Lincoln passenger car.

The five occupants of the Ford Expedition died in the crash. The mother and children were pronounced deceased at the scene and their father was pronounced deceased enroute to a hospital.

The truck's driver, WILLIAM M. KUYKENDALL, age 37, from Camas, Washington, was transported to Merle West Medical Center in Klamath Falls for treatment of minor injuries. He was using safety restraints.

The two occupants of the Lincoln were transported to Merle West Medical Center for examination of possible injuries. They are idenitifed as driver DAVID E. JENNINGS, age 67, and passenger DIANA M. JENNINGS, age 64, both from Spokane, Washington. They were using safety restraints.
