Oregon State Medical Examiner Dr. Karen Gunson was one of eleven people to receive national recognition recently for their outstanding contributions on behalf of organ donors, donor families and transplant patients. The award was presented during the Fifth National Learning Congress on Organ Donation and Transplantation conference, September 30 – October 1, in Grapevine, Texas.
The Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) presented Dr. Gunson with the "Regional Champion Award". She was nominated by Region 6 of the National Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network which represents Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Alaska and Hawaii.
According to HRSA, Dr. Gunson and her fellow honorees were selected because "they are making a difference and creating a positive impact on the field of organ, tissue, and cornea donation and transplantation. Their dedication, energy and leadership provide a direct and lasting benefit to donor families, people in need of transplantation, and transplant recipients."
"Dr. Gunson's steadfast support for donation translates into many lives saved and enhanced. She stands as an exquisite role model to her peers and colleagues throughout the country," said Mike Seely, Executive Director of the Pacific Northwest Transplant Bank in Portland.
"The entire medical examiner system in Oregon supports the donation and transplantation community. I am very honored to accept this award on their behalf," said Dr. Gunson, who was appointed State Medical Examiner in 1999 and has been with the State Medical Examiner Division for 24 years.
