Program Overview

Community Education Services' Smoke Alarm Program works to increase the number of residences with working smoke alarms. Smoke alarms more than double a person’s chance of surviving a fire. Components of the smoke alarm program include workshops, campaigns, smoke alarms on fire department apparatus, smoke alarms for the deaf and hard of hearing, real estate agent training, brochures, and partnering with Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue to support their multi-family housing fire reduction program training. The smoke alarm program supports the Office of State Fire Marshal key performance measure percentage for the homes in which there is a working smoke alarm.

Door-to-Door Smoke Alarm Workshops
The Invasion of the Smoke Alarms - Door-to-Door Smoke Alarm Workshop Training

The Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) invites local fire departments and their community partners to attend workshops on The Invasion of the Smoke Alarms door-to-door smoke alarm campaign. Those attending the workshop will receive a free community smoke alarm program kit. The kit includes recommendations for planning a campaign, recruiting community partners, and implementing and evaluating the program. When the fire department's campaign agreement form for a door-to-door campaign is approved they receive up to 50 free smoke alarms and $250 for the campaign.

Smoke Alarms for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Visual Alarm Code Provisions “Illuminated” -- Because it is not always possible to fix the occupancy of a room or space or anticipate its use by a person who is deaf or hard of hearing, visual alarms are required in every common use room or space in facilities equipped with an emergency alarm system.

Smoke Alarm Media Toolkit
This toolkit is based on the idea that "if your smoke alarm doesn't work, it doesn't work." This kit promotes smoke alarm maintenance and what to do if your alarm sounds.
