| Teachers Guide To Fire Safety |
|
Teachers Guide to Fire Safety lists nine common classroom circumstances teachers need to be aware of to increase fire safety in their classrooms. The letter-sized, two-sided poster lists fire safety tips for classroom and hallway displays, heating devices for classroom pets, storage of recycling and other materials, exit corridors, extension cords, electrical appliances and fire safety issues during special activities or events. The reverse side of the poster contains contact information for each deputy state fire marshal. For more information, contact Connie Dalke at 503-934-8204.

The Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) worked closely with the Oregon Department of Education to assure the curriculums meet Oregon's common curriculum goals, content standards and benchmarks. The scope of lessons and their sequence is continuous from Grade 1 through Grade 8, with each lesson building on understandings developed in preceding lessons. The elementary and middle school curriculum is aligned with the Department of Education's Health Education Standards and meets ORS. 336.071 and OAR 581-022-1210. These curricula are available in hard copy at no cost to Oregon elementary and middle schools.

| Middle School - It's Up to You! |
|
Several factors pointed to the necessity of a curriculum written specifically for juveniles of middle school age: 1) Every year over a thousand youths under the age of eighteen use and misuse fire in Oregon; 2) Most of the fires occurring in the home are the result of human behavior, the things that people do or don’t do; and 3) Youths in middle school are on the way to becoming adults. Education about fire safe practices can empower them to act more safely and responsibly.
It’s Up to You! is built around four core concepts:
• Accurate knowledge about fire is essential.
• Human-caused fires can be prevented.
• Fire and life safety skills can be learned.
• Fire and life safety is a personal responsibility.
With the publication of this curriculum, the Office of State Fire Marshal is taking a proactive approach to teaching youths in middle school about the reality of fire, how the media influences their attitudes and behaviors toward fire, the physical and legal consequences of misusing fire and how to make responsible and safe decisions in fire prevention and survival. The developmental stage of middle school youths makes this an appropriate and crucial stage to teach analytical thinking and decision-making skills around fire and life safety practices.

School fires remain an ongoing concern. Two Oregon school insurers have developed school Arson Campaigns for the schools they cover. Read about the two campaigns and see school fire data from the 2004 Office of State Fire Marshal Annual Report. 2004 OSFM Annual Report: school fire data and school arson campaigns
The campaign flyer was taken to each school covered by Special Districts Association of Oregon.
