Oregon State Fire Marshal Mark Wallace is encouraging Oregonians to submit nominations for the state's 2012 Golden and Silver Sparky awards. The Golden Sparky recognizes a fire service member for outstanding achievement in fire prevention or public fire safety education. The Silver Sparky is the civilian version, awarded to an individual, non-profit organization, or company for outstanding achievement in fire prevention or public fire safety education. "I know there are many Oregonians all over the state who have made contributions in fire prevention and fire prevention education, and encourage everyone to let us know about it," says Oregon State Fire Marshal Mark Wallace. "You don't have to be a member of the fire service to nominate someone. Nominations may be submitted by any member of the public as well."

The U.S. Department of Transportation, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration provides assistance to local, state, and tribal governments through training and planning grants for emergency response. The purpose of this grant program is to increase effectiveness in safely and efficiently handling hazardous materials accidents and incidents, enhance implementation of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986, and encourage a comprehensive approach to emergency training and planning by incorporating the unique challenges of responses to transportation situations.

From 2006 through 2010 in Oregon, there were 2,169 home heating-related fires resulting in nine deaths, 77 injuries, and more than $37 million in property loss. "With the onset of cooler weather, I am appealing to citizens to have the chimneys and flues on their fireplaces and woodstoves cleaned and inspected before using them," says State Fire Marshal Mark Wallace. Start Safe: A Fire and Burn Safety Program for Preschoolers and Their Families provides preschool teachers and fire educators the tools needed to help parents and caregivers make their homes safer. The program provides tools to deliver effective fire education to children ages 3-6 years. The Office of State Fire Marshal's Youth Fire Prevention and Intervention Program, in partnership with Home Safety Council and Safe Kids Oregon, are providing Start Safe kits and training to fire agencies and preschool programs throughout the state at no cost.
