A Sixth Regional Office to Serve Six Counties in the Mid Columbia Region

Condon, Ore.— The Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB) officially announces the formation of a new Mid Columbia management region. This region, also referred to as Region 6, encompasses six counties: Umatilla, Morrow, Gilliam, Sherman, Wheeler and Grant. The field office is located in Condon and is staffed by Sue Greer, the Regional Program Representative (RPR).

OWEB is a state agency that provides grants for projects that benefit fish and wildlife and support communities and local economies. These grants support and build the capacity of watershed councils, soil and water conservation districts, tribal governments, and other local partners. Over the past ten years, OWEB has awarded more than $19 million to these 6 counties, for the completion of a wide range of projects. For example, OWEB recently awarded $266,000 to improve fish and wildlife habitat on the Middle Fork of the John Day.

The need for the new region is a result of an increase in grant applications and an increasing number of open grants and total grants being administered. In order to maintain and improve support and customer service to its grantees, applicants and partners, OWEB received approval from the Legislature to create this new service area.

Ms.Greer, hired in August of 2008, has spent the last four months training on protocols and procedures and began managing over 80 open grants in the region. As the Mid Columbia RPR, Ms. Greer will provide day-to-day oversight of grant project implementation, program representation with all watershed councils and other local partners, review and evaluation of grant applications, and coordination with a broad range of agencies, governments, organizations and groups.

Prior to joining OWEB, Ms. Greer spent five years as an employee of the Wheeler Soil and Water Conservation District. During that period, she acted as Watershed Coordinator for both the Bridge Creek and Mid John Day Watershed Councils and later as a Riparian Buffer Technician.
