GROUP LIFE COORDINATOR 2
$33,708 - $46,644 ANNUALLY


The Group Life Coordinator oversees daily living activities and provides care and guidance to youth offenders assigned to a cottage or living unit.  Major duties:
  • instructs youth offenders in institution rules and regulations and enforces their application;
  • observes, evaluates, and records youth behavior and performance;
  • use of computer to document youth and living unit activities;
  • directs youth in work projects such as cleaning, mopping, waxing, laundry, living unit maintenance and meal preparation;
  • controls and disciplines disruptive youth;
  • maintains and enforces security procedures throughout the institution or camp;
  • participates and contributes as a team member in campus programs for treatment and rehabilitation; and
  • performs searches for unauthorized articles such as weapons or other contraband.

GENERAL INFORMATION 
  • Thee positions are with the OYA at youth correctional facilities in Salem, Woodburn, Albany, Grants Pass, Burns, Warrenton, and Tillamook; and at work-study camps in Florence, Tillamook, and LaGrande. 
  • The Oak Creek YCF (Albany) provide services for an all female population.  The staff at Oak Creek YCF will work in a secured environment that is responsible for providing effective female gender-specific treatment approaches and for responding to young women’s unique issues and needs.
  • -        The MacLaren YCF (Woodburn), Hillcrest YCF (Salem), Tillamook YCF (Tillamook), Eastern Oregon YCF (Burns), North Coast YCF (Warrenton), and the Rogue Valley YCF (Grants Pass) provide services for an all male population.  Founded on the principles of personal responsibility, accountability, and reformation, these facilities provide high security, intensive accountability, and treatment designed to meet the specific reformation needs.
  • -        The RiverBend YCF (LaGrande), Camp Florence (Florence), and Camp Tillamook (Tillamook) are transition programs that provide services for an all male population.  Transition programs provide a bridge from the secure facilities to a community placement.  They provide youth the opportunity to continue treatment, attend school, and build vocational skills.  Youth work on community service projects, supervised work crews and town jobs to instill a work ethic, accountability, and responsibility through payment of restitution to both victims and the community.
  • -        The Young Women’s Transition Program (Albany) provides services for an all female population and is also a transition program.

  • Newly hired employees will attend agency-paid training provided by OYA Training Academy.  Continued employment will be contingent upon completing and successfully passing all parts of this training.
  • A benefit of this position is participation through the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) in the Oregon Public Service Retirement Plan (OPSRP) with employer contributions. This position is also designated as “Police and Fire” membership with PERS which includes the ability to retire 5 years earlier than positions designated “General Membership”.
  • All positions in OYA require the incumbent to serve as a “Mandatory Reporter” of child abuse.
TO QUALIFY
 
Your PD 100 (application form) will be reviewed to verify that you meet the qualifications stated in this section.  To receive credit, your application form must clearly show that you have:
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate, or other proof of education at the same or higher level.
  • Be 21 years of age or older.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to pass a physical standards requirements.
  • IN ADDITION, your application form must clearly show that you have equivalent to:
-   SIX MONTHS full-time experience working with 12 to 25 year old youth offenders in either a residential care or treatment program; or
-   an Associate degree from an accredited school in a behavioral science; or
-   an acceptable certificate from a community or other accredited college in juvenile corrections.
 
PHYSICAL STANDARDS
 
Physical abilities testing must be completed as part of the application process.  You must be able to demonstrate you meet the following physical standards...
  1. ability to climb a flight of stairs,
  2. ability to run 100 yards, then jog 100 yards, and then exercise equivalent to using physical restraining force for 2-3 minutes,
  3. ability to kneel, bend, turn and stand, turn and sit, reach and crawl,
  4. ability to move (not carry) objects weighing from 10 pounds to 162 pounds up to 54 feet,
  5. ability to handle, feel, and have finger dexterity,
  6. acceptable vision of at least 20/30 (with or without correction) in both eyes, with peripheral vision of 160 degrees, and
  7. have binaural hearing (aided or unaided) in ranges from 500-2000 Hz and from 20-60 db. 
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Frequently deals with verbal abuse, threats, and involves dealing with impulsive, rebellious, assaultive youth offenders.
  • May be required to use reasonable force in the performance of duties or during a disturbance or other emergency situation.
  • Requires working shift work in a 24-hour, 7-day a week operation, with night shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
  • Requires adhering to the dress code of the specific work site.
  • Requires maintaining a pattern of dependability as demonstrated by acceptable attendance and being on time to work station.
  • Requires use of computer
  • Requires meeting physical standards for vision, hearing, dexterity, push/pull, running, and jogging.
  • Transports youth offenders as requested, and, if in a security position, operates state vehicles constantly.  You must have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Requires the ability to read, speak and write in English.
  • OYA facilities are tobacco free environments.

OREGON YOUTH AUTHORITY MISSION 
 
The mission of the Oregon Youth Authority (OYA) is to protect the public and reduce crime by holding youth offenders accountable and providing opportunities for reformation in safe environments. 
 
As an OYA employee, individuals are a part of the team responsible for the supervision, management and administration of correctional facilities, parole and probation services, community out-of-home placements, and other functions related to state programs for youth corrections.  These responsibilities are provided for youth offenders from diverse cultures and backgrounds ranging in age from 12 to 18 (in some cases up to age 25).  The youth offenders may reside in one of eleven OYA-operated facilities located around the state or may be involved with services under the jurisdiction of OYA such as parole and probation.
