OYA enforces industry recommended protocols for strong passwords for logging onto OYA networks, OYA's OTIS timekeeping system, JJIS, JJPS (used by partner agencies), and the JJIS Reports System.

The new requirements for passwords follow industry recommended protocols:
  • changing passwords every six months
  • creating passwords that consist of 8 or more characters
  • using a combination of lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols

Guidelines - Strong Passwords

While most accounts, subscriptions, and websites have their own criteria for passwords, following are some general rules of thumb that you can use for creating passwords for both your business and personal use.

  • Keep passwords long.
  • Combine lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Use words and phrases easy for you to remember, but difficult for others to guess.
  • Use a phrase or sentence to create a "new" word -- e.g., instead of using your dog's name, "Bingo", start with "Bingo is his nameo".
  • Then, substitute special characters or symbols that look like letters and mix uppercase and lowercase letters -- "B1ng0i$nam0".

Password validations will be conducted when users log on.
