CHIEF DEPUTY DEFENDER
(DEPUTY DEFENDERS - ALL LEVELS)

$4,277 - $8,945 MONTHLY

APPELLATE CRIMINAL LAW.  The Appellate Division of the Office of Public Defense Services represents financially eligible persons in criminal and parole appeals before the Oregon Court of Appeals, the Oregon Supreme Court, and, on occasion, the U.S. Supreme Court.  The division is accepting applications for Chief Deputy Defender, Senior Deputy Defender, Deputy Defender 2, and Deputy Defender 1 positions.

  • Chief Deputy Defender – The Chief Defender, Assistant Chief Defender, and two Chief Deputies form the management team for the Appellate Division.  Each chief deputy maintains a reduced caseload and has discrete managerial responsibilities.  The chief deputy for operations (the current vacancy) is responsible for: assigning cases and overseeing caseloads; designing and managing the division’s approach to paperless document production, filing, and storage; monitoring employee and office performance; attending team meetings and oral arguments; and responding to complaints, PCR claims and tort claims.  The monthly salary range is $6,067 to $8,945, plus full state employment benefits.

  • Senior Deputy Defender - A Senior Deputy has several years of experience as a criminal appellate attorney, has demonstrated expertise in multiple subject areas of criminal and appellate law, and has briefed and argued several cases in the Oregon Supreme Court, another state supreme court, or a federal circuit court.  A Senior Deputy has strong skills as a legal researcher, writer, editor and oral advocate, and possesses the interest and ability to teach those skills to others.  In addition to managing a caseload of complex cases, a senior deputy’s duties include: leading a team of attorneys; leading group legal discussions in a team setting; editing co-workers’ briefs; training new attorney employees; providing office-wide training; serving as an office resource for attorneys and staff; meeting and working with management to identify and implement new office policies and procedures; and providing critical input for attorney evaluations.  The monthly salary range is $5,739 to $8,478, plus full state employment benefits.

  • Deputy Defender 2 - A Deputy Defender 2 has significant work experience in appellate criminal law and strong analytical, research, writing and advocacy skills. The attorney must have the ability and willingness to handle cases with novel or complex issues and serve as a legal resource for others.  A Defender 2 attorney is assigned a broad range of cases, from misdemeanors to felonies, including murder and aggravated murder.  A Defender 2 is expected to develop areas of expertise and share that expertise.  A Defender 2 is also expected to contribute to the development of the division and its attorneys by serving as a legal resource to colleagues and attorneys in the criminal defense bar.  The monthly salary range is $4,963 to $7,323, plus full state employment benefits.

  • Deputy Defender 1 - The Deputy Defender 1 position is an ideal entry level opportunity for the individual who has a strong interest in criminal defense, possesses superior research, analytic, and writing skills, and enjoys learning and working cooperatively in an office environment.  An attorney in this position manages a caseload of misdemeanor, simple felony and parole appeals.  The monthly salary range is $4,277 to $5,739, plus full state employment benefits.

Applicants must be members of the Oregon State Bar, or willing to sit for the next available bar examination (February 2010).  Submit cover letter, resumé, references and a writing sample (not to exceed 25 pages) by December 11, 2009, to:
