George H. Burnett Biography
 

 

        George H. Burnett was born ln Yamhill County, Oregon, May 9, 1853. Son of George W. and Sidney A. (Younger) Burnett. Married Miriam Belt December 31, 1879, and her death occurred on March 20, 1924. On October 12, 1925, the Judge was married to Mrs. Lorena Wise, of Salem.
 
        He attended McMinnville College at McMinnville, Oregon, graduating from same in 1873 with degree of A. B. Read law in office of Mallory & Shaw in Salem, Oregon, two years. Admitted to the bar at Salem, Oregon, in December 1875, to the United States District and Circuit Courts in 1876. Commenced the practice of law in Salem, Oregon, in 1876. Elected District Attorney of the Third Judicial District in 1876 and served until 1878. Formed partnership with John J. Shaw in 1878, which continued until 1886; since that time practiced alone. Appointed Supreme Court Reporter in 1891. In 1892 elected Judge of Third Judicial District which office he held until December 31, 1910. Elected to Supreme Court of Oregon in 1910, taking office the first of January in 1911. Re-elected in 1916, and in 1922. Served as Chief Justice in 1921 and 1922, also from January 1, 1927 until September 10, 1927, the date of his death.

        Member of Masonic, B. P. O. E. and I. O. O. F. Fraternities. 33° Mason. Republican.
