Apprenticeship Opportunities in Oregon
Industrial Trade Opportunities
This section contains occupational summaries for industrial trade programs in Oregon. Workers in these occupations typically perform specialized work in an industrial plant. The apprenticeship opportunities in industrial trades are more limited than those available in the construction trades.
Employers who are registered as training agents for industrial trades usually select apprentices from their own employees. Apprenticeship is a training and advancement opportunity for employees of the companies that participate in the apprenticeship program. Like construction employers, industrial employers must use an approved selection method, advertise openings within their plants and choose apprentices in a fair and nondiscriminatory manner.
If you find an industrial trade that interests you, contact the apprenticeship committee to find employers that are registered as training agents and ask about their apprentice selection process. You can ask the employer about the jobs you should pursue in order to qualify for the particular apprenticeship, when such jobs are open and how you can apply.
Be prepared to start at an entry level and work toward the apprenticeship opportunity. While it takes time and effort to become an apprentice in an industrial trade, you benefit by having a productive and well-paying career.
