Ann Bakkensen was a panelist on Oregon's first citizens' initiative review, a process she calls "...democracy in action." A retired Portland Public Schools librarian, Ms. Bakkensen has also pursued a career of community service for more than 30 years. She has served in a variety of elected, appointed and volunteer positions with public and private organizations from the local to the national level.
Speaking of her work as a citizens' initiative review panelist, Ms. Bakkensen says, "The opportunity to work with a variety of people for a common goal was both humbling and inspiring. It made me think of the man in the Norman Rockwell painting Freedom of Speech, speaking up and being heard at a town meeting. And it made me realize that for the process to work, everyone's voice needs to be heard. Democracy feels good!"
