Improving Oregon’s investigation, prosecution and judicial handling of cases of child abuse and neglect.

The Federal Children's Justice Act (CJA) provides grants to states to improve the investigation, prosecution and judicial handling of cases of child abuse and neglect, particularly child sexual abuse and exploitation in ways that limit additional trauma to the child victim. States are required to distribute these funds as grants for the purpose of developing, establishing and operating programs designed to improve:

(1) assessment and investigation of suspected child abuse and neglect cases, including cases of suspected child sexual abuse and exploitation;

(2) assessment and investigation of cases of child fatalities related to suspected child abuse or neglect;

(3) investigation and prosecution of cases of child abuse and neglect, and child sexual abuse and exploitation; and

(4) assessment and investigation of cases involving children with disabilities or serious health-related problems who are suspected victims of child abuse or neglect.

Current Funding Priorities

Within the federal priorities, Oregon CJA has established the following current funding priorities:

1. Domestic Violence - Develop multi-disciplinary training and support projects that address domestic violence cases where children are involved, and evaluate their effectiveness.

2. Sex Abuse - Standardize forensic interview protocols and provide initial and ongoing training to child interviewers.

3. Bias - Provide multi-disciplinary training to staff to mitigate bias in decision-making in the child welfare system.

4.Court Procedures - Provide training and support projects that facilitate effective participation in the juvenile court process.

5. Karly's Law - Develop and distribute multi-disciplinary training on Karly’s Law.
