Forensic patient reported on unauthorized leave from Oregon State Hospital

A 65-year-old Oregon State Hospital patient was reported on unauthorized leave from the Salem campus Friday evening after he failed to return from an unsupervised afternoon pass to the Salem Public Library. Hospital officials have notified state and local police agencies.

Richard Laing, a patient on hospital ward 50G, was admitted to the hospital as a forensic patient in February 2002 following a Multnomah County conviction on kidnapping and two counts of assault II. Hospital officials said Laing was supposed to have returned to the hospital by 5 p.m. Friday but did not.

Laing is described as a Caucasian, 5-foot-11, 215 pounds, graying hair, brown eyes, glasses and having a tattoo reading USN on his upper left arm. Although hospital staff did not note what Laing was wearing when he left the hospital, they said he typically wears blue jeans, dark t-shirt, jean jacket and tennis shoes.

Anyone with information about Laing's whereabouts is asked to contact Oregon State Police toll free at 1-800-452-7888 or local law-enforcement agency.
