Safe Kids and Emanuel Hospital promote kids helmets at $5 sale

Children’s bike and multi-sport helmets will be sold this Saturday at a special sale sponsored by the Oregon Safe Kids Coalition and Legacy Emanuel Hospital.

The sale will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Legacy Hospital Atrium, 2801 N. Gantenbein in Portland. All sizes and styles of helmets will be offered for $5 each, thanks to the generosity of Legacy Emanuel Hospital.

"Helmets prevent serious injury caused by head injury," said Adrienne Greene, SafeKids chair, coordinator and injury prevention specialist in the Oregon Department of Human Services. "We want to help parents protect their children and draw attention to Oregon’s new helmet law."

Since Jan. 1, children 15 years and younger must wear safety helmets when skateboarding, riding a scooter or using in-on line skates in a public place. The penalty for violation is a $25 fine.

Greene said that a child safety seat clinic will occur in conjunction with the helmet sale in parking structure 3 at Emanuel.
