What:"Splash into Safety" will be the focus of Safe Kids Day at the Oregon Zoo. Annual fair educates children and parents about injury prevention. Free with zoo admission.
When:Saturday, May 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where:Oregon Zoo, 4001 SW Canyon Road, Portland.
Who:For children, parents and other family members
Why:Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death among Oregon children from birth to 14 years. From 2000 and 2002, 28 children drowned and another 44 were hospitalized for water-related injuries.
The goal of Oregon Safe Kids is to prevent childhood injury and death.
This year, staying safe while playing in and around water is the focus of displays, hands-on activities, prizes and safety tips. Additional exhibits demonstrate traffic, fire and helmet safety, how to protect children from poisoning, and what to do in emergency.
