Nominations sought for annual mental health awards

Nominations will be accepted through Aug. 29 for nominations for the 2005 Mental Health Award of Excellence, awarded annually by the Oregon chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill and the Oregon Psychiatric Association.

Nominations will be accepted in two categories -- individual and organization -- for the awards, which in the past have gone to students, volunteers, educators, professionals, family members and consumers. More than one award may be presented in each category.

"Many people work tirelessly to help meet the needs of people with mental illness," said Bob Nikkel, mental health administrator for the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS). "The past two years have seen gains such as legislative approval of insurance-parity legislation and progress toward replacing the state hospital as well as challenges such as budget cutbacks."

Details about what to include in nominations are available by contacting DHS' Jamie Rockwell at (503) 945-9708 or at the DHS mental health Web site where both criteria and a nomination form can be found.

Awards will be presented Oct. 5 in the Oregon State Capitol in Salem. Mental Health Awareness Week will be observed Oct. 2-8.
